Call for 2020 NBC Board of Trustees Candidates

The National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology (NBC) is seeking individuals to fill open seats on the 2020 NBC Board of Trustees.

New board members will be elected, or appointed, in the fall of 2019 and will take office on Jan. 1, 2020.

The boards guide the organization through proven leadership, a shared vision and support for the missions of the association. If you enjoy collaborating with other professionals and have a desire to give back to your profession, we want you!

Qualities of an Effective Board of Trustees Member

-       Serving as an association leader is both an honor and a reward. It requires a proven commitment to the organization and its missions and goals.

-       Participating fully in association activities requires extra time and expense for attending meetings.

-       Well-developed interpersonal skills and ability to communicate are essential to effective teamwork.

-       An effective board member brings their expertise and experience to provide value, but such experience and expertise should not drive the policy-making process.

-       Intuitive and interpretive skills enable leaders to understand the people around them, internalize the data they receive, recognize the relationships that exist between systems within their world and integrate all these elements into a coherent whole.

-       Focusing on policy-making, not the day-to-day operations of the organization is what makes an effective board.

To view eligibility requirements for board service, or to download an application please click here. Candidates interested in serving will be required to read and sign a board application in order to be considered for board service.

Contact Meghan Brasher at [email protected] or by phone at (800) 684-5310 to request a board application. A short candidate biography and digital headshot should be submitted with the completed form. All applications must be submitted by email to [email protected]  by 12:00 pm EST on Friday, March 29, 2019. No late submissions will be considered.

For Immediate Release

NBC Announces CDL Standard Changes

Tallahassee, Florida: The NBC Trust reviewed the CDL Program in detail at the April 2017 in person meeting and identified several potential changes to the CDL program.  From this meeting, a Task Force was developed to further discuss the potential changes and bring forward recommended changes to the NBC Trust.

Since establishing the Task Force, there have been a series of conference calls as well as a survey of current CDLs and a survey of non-certified dental laboratories to help determine recommendations for next steps.

In December 2017, the Task Force presented draft recommendations to the Trust for consideration to ensure they were on the right track with their suggested changes.

At its April 2018 meeting, the NBC Trust directed that the following proposed revisions to the CDL standards be distributed to the communities of interest for review and comment, with all comments due June 14, 2018 for consideration at the June 2018 NBC Trust meeting.

Following the comment due date June 14, 2018, the NBC Trust voted to pass all standard changes as they were during their June 2018 meeting. Please see the table below for more information on the updated standards.

Previous Standard

Updated Standard

Specialty Specific Photographic Documentation

CDLs must illustrate that specialty-specific facility standards have been met. This is accomplished through photographs that illustrate acceptable technical resources (well maintained and functional) in their respective specialty areas.

NBC will no longer require additional specialty specific photographic documentation for CDLs.

Photographic documentation is still be necessary for general facility and equipment requirements as outlined in the NBC materials.

CDL Designation and

Specialty Recognition

Certification shall be offered in each or any of the following specialty areas:  Complete Dentures, Partial Dentures, Crown & Bridge, Ceramics and Orthodontics. A laboratory may apply for certification in any or all specialties offered by, and performed in, the physical facility applying for certification.

NBC will offer a universal CDL certification with same requirements for all. CDLs can still receive recognition in a given specialty area if they meet the Personnel Requirement within a specialty area as follows:

In each specialty for which recognition is requested, all work must be done in cooperation with a Certified Dental Technician(s) holding current certification in that specialty. Each CDT must facilitate the technical work of not more than fifteen (15) non-certified technicians employed in the respective specialty.

NBC is adding Implants as a specialty area within the CDL program.

Personnel Requirement

Each CDT must facilitate the technical work of not more than fifteen (15) non-certified technicians employed in the respective specialty.

In order to be a CDL, there must be one CDT of record within the laboratory listed on the CDL application.

Facility Requirement – Fire Blanket

Emergency fire blanket(s) should be stored in an easily accessible location in the area(s) of the lab with the greatest potential for fire.

NBC will no longer require a fire blanket as part of facility standards.

The approved standards went into effect on June 30, 2018 and all current CDL’s have been sent a letter informing them of the standard updates as of August 1, 2018.  The NBC website and CDL Handbook and Applications have been updated with the new standard information. If you have any further questions, you can contact Justin Mischler at [email protected].

NBC Launches Computer-Based Testing for Written Examinations

Posted on June 18, 2018

NBC is excited to announce that they are launching computer-based testing for the written examinations. The first computer-based testing (CBT) written examinations will be offered beginning July 1, 2018.
“The NBC Board of Trustees has been researching computer-based testing options for some time now,” said NBC Chair, Denise Burris, CDT. “Our goal was to increase accessibility for dental technicians interested in pursuing the CDT examinations, without sacrificing examination security. We saw computer-based testing as an opportunity to offer a greater number of testing locations and more flexible scheduling.”
NBC will partner with Assessment Systems Corporation to offer the CDT and RG written examinations online using a third-party remote proctor. “Computer-based testing with remote proctoring still meets the desire for increased accessibility as candidates will be able to complete their CDT or RG written examinations online at a location, date and time of their choosing,” said NBC Secretary/Fiscal Officer, Dennis Urban, CDT.
Of course, there will be certain rules to ensure the integrity of the process. For example, test takers will be required to select a 30-day testing window during which time they must schedule and complete their examination. Additionally, test takers will be required to test in a private location and no recording devices or test related materials may be on the desk or within reach of the test taker. Test takers must also have a computer available with a webcam, speakers, microphone and internet access to be able to communicate with the remote online proctor. Most importantly, test takers will be required to complete a series of security protocols before, during and after the examination.
“Over the last two years, our focus has been on updating our examinations to keep pace with the changing market trends’,” said Morris Fucarino, CDT, NBC Vice Chair. “In 2017, we launched revised job task outlines, updated examination references, reviewed and rewrote examination questions and revised practical examinations. Now, our goal is to focus on how we can deliver these examinations to make them more convenient, while still maintaining the integrity of the process.”
For additional information on becoming a CDT and the new computer-based testing option for the written examinations, please visit https://nbccert.org/certificants/certified-dental-technician/cdt-application.cfm or contact NBC by email at [email protected] or by phone at (800) 684-5310.
