The National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology (NBC) is proud to annually recognize one Certified Dental Technician (CDT) who has made a remarkable impact on the industry. This year, the NBC is excited to present the 2025 CDT of the Year award to Michael Wandling, Master CDT, in honor of his outstanding contributions and unwavering dedication to excellence.

With over 23 years of experience in the dental laboratory profession, Wandling has demonstrated exceptional leadership and expertise. Wandling began his career in 2010, earning his first CDT certification in Crown & Bridge, and has since expanded his qualifications to include multiple specialties, including Ceramics, Implants, Complete Dentures, and Digital Workflow. His passion for continuous learning and professional growth has led him to become a Master CDT, a distinction held by only 50 technicians worldwide.

As Operations Manager at Summit-Horizon Dental Lab, Wandling is responsible for overseeing daily operations and driving innovation in the lab's digital and traditional workflow processes. Under his leadership, the laboratory has grown to embrace cutting-edge technology while maintaining a strong commitment to quality. Wandling’s deep expertise in digital dentures, digital workflow, and advanced ceramics has made him a key figure in advancing the field.

Beyond his work at Summit-Horizon, Wandling is a committed mentor and advocate for certification in the dental laboratory community. He has served on the NBC Board of Trustees for three years and is also dedicated to increasing the number of certified technicians in the industry, mentoring numerous colleagues and hosting CDT exams. His efforts have directly contributed to the growth of certification within the dental technology field.

In addition to his professional achievements, Wandling is actively involved in continuing education. He has presented at various conferences, including the Mid-Continent Dental Congress, and contributed to industry articles, such as the JDT piece "Step by Step to CDT" in 2023. His involvement in the development of the CDT Digital Workflow specialty has had a profound impact on the industry, making it one of the most popular certifications for CAD/CAM technicians.

Wandling’s dedication to his craft, his contributions to certification, and his role in shaping the future of dental technology make him a deserving recipient of this award. His journey is a testament to the power of certification and the positive impact it has on both individual careers and the dental laboratory profession.
